What is Descriptive Writing?
Descriptive writing is like painting a picture with words. It is text that describes a person, place, thing, or event using the five senses.
Imagine you want to tell your friend about your favourite toy. Instead of saying, “I like my car,” you can say, “My car is red. It has shiny wheels!
That’s descriptive writing. It uses words that help others see, hear, smell, taste, or feel what you describe.
Tips for Teaching Descriptive Writing to Kindergarteners:
Use the Five Senses:
Encourage children to think about what they see, hear, smell, taste, and touch.
- “What colour is it?”
- “What does it sound like?”
- “How does it feel?”
- “Does it have a special smell?”
- “Does it taste sweet or sour?”

- Use Vivid Words: big, huge, pretty, yellow and many more interesting words.
- Show, Don’t Tell: encourage students to write short, engaging sentences. The ice cream was cold. The dress is blue.
- Use Pictures: Show children pictures and ask them to describe what they see.
- Make it Fun: Use colourful markers, stickers, and fun writing prompts to make the activity engaging.
The Key Elements of A Descriptive Writing Paragraph:
- Main Idea: Describe the main point. Is it a toy, a friend, a pet, a place, or something else?
- Supporting Details: are the pieces of information that help explain or prove the main idea. They can be facts, examples, descriptions, or reasons.
- Conclusion: A simple sentence summarizing the description.
