A Personal Narrative

A personal narrative

Every kindergartener has a treasure chest of amazing experiences waiting to be shared. Writing a personal narrative is all about telling our own unique stories. Let’s explore how we can help young learners become fantastic personal narrative storytellers.

What is a Personal Narrative?

A personal narrative is a piece of writing that shares something that happened in your life. It is a story based on actual events.

Features of a Great Kindergarten Personal Narrative:

  1. It’s about YOU: The writer is a character in the story.
  2. It tells about one main event: Focus on one thing that happened.
  3. It has a beginning, a middle, and an end:
    • The beginning: Tells who was there and where it happened.
    • Middle: Tells what happened step-by-step.
    • End: Tells how the story finished and how you felt.
  4. It uses “I” and “me”: Since it’s about you.
  5. It shares your feelings: How did you feel during the story? Happy? Scared? Excited?

Why Do We Write Personal Narratives?

Writing about our own experiences is important because it helps us:

  • Share our special moments with others: We get to tell people what happened to us.
  • Remember fun and memorial moments: Writing helps us keep those memories alive.
  • Practice writing skills: We learn to put our thoughts and feelings into words.
  • Understand our feelings: Thinking about our experiences helps us understand our feelings.
  • Connect with others: Our stories can help us see that we have things in common with our friends.

Brainstorming for Your Amazing Story Topic:

Sometimes, the hardest part is figuring out what to write about. Here are some fun ways to brainstorm:

  • Think about your favorite days: What made those days special?
  • Look at photos: Do any pictures remind you of a fun or engaging time?
  • Talk to your family: Ask them about things you did together.
  • Think about things you learned: Did you learn something new that was exciting?
  • Tell a friend about your day: What would be the most interesting thing you’d share?
