An introduction paragraph is like the beginning of a story. It is where we first meet the characters and learn the story. In a written piece, the introduction is the first paragraph.
A good introduction should do two things:
- Hook the reader: Grab their attention right away. You can do this with a surprising fact, a funny question, or a vivid description.
- Introduce the topic: With the thesis statement, you can tell the reader what the main idea of your writing is.
Parts Of An Introduction Paragraph
- Hook: This is the first sentence. Grab the reader’s attention with a relevant comment, question, quotation or humorous remark.
- Background Information: Provide specific examples and descriptions to make your writing more interesting.
- Thesis Statement: This is the most important part of the introduction paragraph. It should state the purpose of the essay.
Here’s an example of an introduction for a story about a dog:
Once upon a time, there was a little puppy named Max. Max was the cutest puppy in the whole world. He had soft fur and big, floppy ears.
In this introduction, the first sentence hooks the reader with a fairy tale beginning. The second sentence gave a brief introduction about the main character, Max. The final sentence tells some of the characteristics of the main character which will be focus of the essay.
