Common Nouns

Common Nouns

Common nouns are everyday names for people, places, animals, and things. Kids often see these words, but can they spot them in sentences? Our Nouns Worksheet helps kids master basic grammar with fun colouring and writing activities.

What is a Noun?

A noun names a person, animal, place, or thing. Teaching this in four parts helps children begin to identify the basics of language.

Here is a simple way to explain the four noun categories to children:

Person

A person noun tells us who someone is. Mom is a perfect example because she is a person you see every day. She is loving and caring toward her children. Whenever you are talking about a human being, you are using a person noun.

Animal:

An animal noun describes a living thing that moves and breathes but isn’t a person. Animals can be pets at home, like a cat or a dog, or they can live on a farm or in the wild, like a pig or a fox. Every creature, from a tiny bug to a big elephant, is an animal noun.

Place:

A place noun tells us where something is or where you can go. A hut is a simple place that provides shelter. Places can be small, like a pit or a den, or they can be where people work, like a lab. If you can walk into it or stand inside it, it is a place noun.

Thing:

A thing noun is an object that is not alive. A cup is a thing because you can hold it in your hand and use it, but it doesn’t breathe or grow. Common things in a classroom or home include a pen, a box, or a map. If you can touch it, but it isn’t a person, animal, or place, it is a thing.
